German Emigration Centre, Bremerhaven
In search of a better life, more than 7.2 million Germans left the country via Bremerhaven. Driven by poverty and hunger, their destinations included the United States, Canada, South America and Australia. You’ll retrace the steps of the emigrants in this interactive exhibition based on true stories.
On receiving your boarding ticket, your journey will start. In the role of an emigrant, you’ll get on your way into an unknown future – torn between fear, uncertainty and joy.
How narrow is a ship’s cabin? What is it like to arrive on Ellis Island, the “Isle of Tears”? How’s life in a new world? You’ll find answers to these questions… and you might even find out about emigrants in your own family!
